Public Health Advisory: Potomac River Recreational Warning

DC Health and the Department of Energy and Environment maintain a high-level recreational water advisory for the Potomac River effective Friday, February 27, 2026. This advisory follows the significant infrastructure failure of the Potomac Interceptor earlier this winter. Residents and visitors are strongly advised to avoid all recreational activities that involve water contact, including swimming, wading, and kayaking, from the American Legion Bridge down to the District line.

Ongoing repairs to the collapsed 72-inch sewer main are expected to continue for several more weeks. While bypass systems are currently operational, potential secondary discharges and elevated bacteria levels—specifically E. coli—pose a significant health risk. Residents are urged to observe all posted signage at waterfront access points and keep pets away from the shoreline until sustainable repairs are completed and water quality testing confirms the river is safe for use.

DC Council Performance Oversight Hearings

The Council of the District of Columbia continues its Fiscal Year 2025-2026 Performance Oversight Hearings today, February 27, 2026. These proceedings are a critical part of the District’s transparency and budget process, allowing the Council to vet the efficiency of various government entities. Today’s scheduled hearings include a deep dive into the operations of the Public Service Commission and the Office of the People’s Counsel under the Committee on Transportation and the Environment.

These hearings are broadcast live on DC Council Channel 13 and are available for virtual streaming. The Council encourages public testimony; however, witnesses requiring language or sign language interpretation must provide notice ten business days in advance to ensure accommodation.
