Major Metro Closures and Rock Creek Parkway Delays This Saturday
Weekend Commuter Alert: Metro Maintenance and Key Roadwork
As we head into the final day of February 2026, residents and visitors in the District should prepare for significant disruptions across both the public transit network and major surface streets. Whether you are planning a trip to the National Mall or a commute across the Potomac, several maintenance projects will likely extend your travel time this Saturday, February 28.
Metrorail Service Interruptions
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has announced substantial service adjustments for the weekend to accommodate critical infrastructure work. Commuters using the Blue and Yellow lines face the most significant impact, as both lines are suspended between National Airport and Pentagon City. Free shuttle buses are operating in place of trains to bridge the gap, but travelers should allow at least an extra 20 to 30 minutes for the transfer. Notably, the Crystal City station is completely closed today as crews work on the construction of a second entrance.
On the Red Line, trains are single-tracking between Dupont Circle and Van Ness-UDC for grout pad rehabilitation. While no stations are closed, passengers should expect longer headways. Trains are running every 9 minutes between Farragut North and Glenmont, but frequency drops to every 18 minutes between Farragut North and Shady Grove. The Green, Orange, and Silver lines are maintaining normal weekend service schedules.
Key Road Closures and Traffic Advisories
Drivers should expect delays on several major arteries due to ongoing and emergency repairs:
- Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway: DC Water is conducting a pipeline inspection today. One southbound lane near the Waterside Drive NW on-ramp will be closed from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Additionally, a full-time lane closure remains in effect southbound between P Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW for sewer gate restoration.
- Capitol Hill: Utility repairs by Washington Gas have forced the closure of westbound lanes on the 100 block of Independence Avenue SE, between 1st and 2nd Streets. Local detours are in place, and motorists are encouraged to use Pennsylvania Avenue as an alternative.
- 22nd Street NW: Emergency sewer pipe repairs continue to impact the West End. Closures remain in effect northbound between P and Q Streets and southbound between Massachusetts Avenue and P Street.
- Nebraska Avenue NW: A sidewalk repair project between Tenley Circle and Davenport Street NW may result in temporary lane narrowing throughout the day.
Regional Travel Tips
In Northern Virginia, work continues on the 495 NEXT project. While primary lane closures are often scheduled for overnight hours, construction activity near the Dulles Toll Road and I-495 interchange may cause intermittent slowing. For those traveling within the District, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) recommends using navigation apps to monitor real-time congestion, particularly around the Rock Creek corridor where lane reductions will persist until Monday morning.
