D.C. Council Conducts Disability Services Oversight as Multiple Regulatory Boards Convene Today

Council Oversight and Regulatory Boards Lead Today's D.C. Government Agenda

Today, Thursday, February 26, 2026, marks a high-activity day in the District’s annual performance oversight season. The Council of the District of Columbia and a wide array of executive boards have scheduled a series of hearings and public meetings to review agency operations, address complex regulatory matters, and evaluate infrastructure safety initiatives.

Disability Services Under the Microscope

The Council of the District of Columbia is continuing its rigorous schedule of performance oversight hearings, which serve as a critical check on government efficiency. At 9:30 a.m., the Committee of the Whole is scheduled to convene a virtual session to examine the performance of the Office of Disability Rights (ODR) and the Department on Disability Services (DDS).

These hearings are a staple of the legislative calendar, providing Councilmembers with an opportunity to scrutinize how effectively agencies have served residents over the past year before the upcoming budget for Fiscal Year 2027 is finalized. Today’s session is expected to focus on accessibility improvements, vocational rehabilitation outcomes, and the management of support services for residents with developmental and physical disabilities.

Regulatory Boards and Public Commissions

In addition to legislative oversight, several of the District’s influential regulatory bodies are holding public sessions today to manage the city’s administrative and commercial landscape:

  • Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB): This board is holding a comprehensive virtual meeting from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to review permit applications, preservation projects, and landmark designations.
  • Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Board (ABC Board): Meeting from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the board will address licensing and enforcement actions for the District’s hospitality and nascent cannabis industries.
  • Public Service Commission (PSC): An open meeting is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. to discuss utility regulations and consumer service standards affecting District residents.
  • Board of Real Estate Appraisers: A supplemental public meeting is slated for 9:30 a.m. to discuss professional standards and licensing updates.

Infrastructure and Traffic Safety

In the afternoon, the Major Crash Review Task Force will gather for its first-quarter meeting of 2026. Beginning at 2:30 p.m., the task force will review data from recent traffic incidents and evaluate the efficacy of current safety interventions. This meeting is part of the city’s ongoing effort to refine its Vision Zero strategy and reduce traffic-related fatalities and injuries across the eight wards.

Furthermore, Washington serves as the host for the final day of the AASHTO Washington Briefing. This policy forum has seen District and state transportation officials collaborating with federal leaders to discuss infrastructure investment priorities and the future of surface transportation reauthorization.
