Commuter Alert: Multiple Bridge Projects and 22nd St Closure Disrupt DC Traffic This Monday
Significant Road Closures and Infrastructure Projects
As the work week begins on Monday, March 9, 2026, Washington D.C. commuters face a complex landscape of roadworks and bridge rehabilitation projects. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and DC Water have confirmed several major restrictions that are expected to cause significant delays during the morning and evening rush hours.
The most critical impact remains in the West End and Dupont Circle area. 22nd Street NW is currently closed for emergency sewer repairs following the Potomac Interceptor collapse. Northbound lanes are blocked between P and Q Streets, and southbound lanes are closed from Massachusetts Avenue to P Street. DC Water officials indicate that while repairs are entering their final stages, the closure will likely persist through mid-March. Motorists are advised to use 21st Street for southbound detours or Connecticut Avenue for northbound travel.
Additional major artery impacts include:
- Connecticut Avenue NW: Service lanes remain closed between Q Street and Dupont Circle as part of the ongoing Deckover project.
- Theodore Roosevelt Bridge: Drivers should expect reduced lane capacity and the continued closure of the eastbound US Route 50 ramp.
- Benning Road Bridges: Utility relocation work is causing intermittent lane shifts near the bridges in Northeast DC.
- Pennsylvania Avenue SE: Ongoing roadway projects between 27th Street and Alabama Avenue may slow traffic in the Southeast corridor.
- Georgia Avenue NW: Construction continues between Girard Street and Howard Place NW, affecting bus lanes and local traffic.
Public Transport and WMATA Service Updates
Metro rail services are operating on a regular weekday schedule this morning; however, riders should be aware of a major technology transition at parking facilities. Following the launch of the "Tap. Ride. Go." initiative on March 6, the Addison Road-Seat Pleasant station has become the first to accept contactless credit cards and mobile wallets for parking payments. This system is expected to expand across the network through the spring.
For those utilizing the DC Streetcar, today marks one of the final weeks of service. DDOT has confirmed the system will permanently cease operations on March 31, 2026. Until then, the streetcar is running on a modified schedule of 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM with 20-minute headways. Commuters who previously relied on the H Street corridor service are encouraged to begin transitioning to the WMATA D20 bus or other local alternatives.
Finally, the WMATA Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC) will hold a Bus and Rail Subcommittee meeting today from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. While this does not impact service, riders interested in the future of transit accessibility are invited to join the virtual session.
