Sunday Transit Alert: Crystal City Metro Closure and Evening Event Delays
Significant Metro Adjustments on Blue, Yellow, and Red Lines
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has announced major service changes for Sunday, March 1, 2026, that will significantly impact travel across the region. Travelers on the Blue and Yellow lines should prepare for the full closure of the Crystal City station. This closure is necessary for the ongoing construction of a new station entrance. To assist commuters, free shuttle buses are operating in a loop between National Airport and Pentagon City throughout the day.
On the Red Line, maintenance crews are performing essential grout pad rehabilitation. This work requires trains to single-track between the Dupont Circle and Van Ness stations. As a result, trains are scheduled to run every 9 minutes between Farragut North and Glenmont, while those traveling between Farragut North and Shady Grove will experience longer wait times, with trains arriving approximately every 18 minutes.
DC Streetcar Sunday Service Eliminated
As a reminder for residents and visitors in the H Street and Benning Road corridors, Sunday service for the DC Streetcar has been officially eliminated. This service adjustment, which began earlier this year, is part of the District Department of Transportation’s (DDOT) winding-down process as the streetcar system prepares for a full decommissioning later this month. Commuters who typically rely on the streetcar for Sunday travel are advised to utilize WMATA Metrobus alternatives, such as the D20 route, to navigate the Northeast quadrant.
Key Road Closures and Construction Projects
Motorists should be aware of several high-impact work zones and lane closures currently affecting major arteries:
- Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway: DC Water is conducting a sewer rehabilitation project that has resulted in the closure of the right southbound lane between P Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. This closure is expected to remain in place until 5:00 AM on Monday morning.
- Connecticut Avenue NW: Long-term deckover construction continues to disrupt traffic near Dupont Circle. Service lanes remain closed from Q Street through to the circle.
- Pennsylvania Avenue SE: A roadway restoration project is active between 27th Street SE and Alabama Avenue SE, causing intermittent lane shifts.
- Georgia Avenue NW: Roadway work between Girard Street and Howard Place NW may cause minor delays for those traveling through the Howard University area.
Evening Event Congestion in Penn Quarter
Evening traffic is expected to be particularly heavy in the Penn Quarter and Chinatown neighborhoods. Capital One Arena is hosting a sold-out performance by comedian Matt Rife, with the event scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM. Heavy pedestrian activity and vehicle congestion are anticipated around the 7th Street NW corridor and F Street NW starting as early as 5:30 PM. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the immediate vicinity of the arena or utilize the Green, Yellow, or Orange lines for direct access to downtown destinations.
