Roadwork on Georgia Avenue and Major Weekend Metro Closures Ahead

Friday Morning Commute Overview
Good morning, District commuters. As we head into the final workday of the week, Friday, March 6, 2026, traffic is moving steadily on most major arteries, though several long-term infrastructure projects and utility repairs are creating localized bottlenecks. While the morning rush on I-395 and I-295 has stabilized following earlier incidents near Potomac Park and Malcolm X Avenue, drivers should remain alert for ongoing construction zones across all quadrants.
Major Roadworks and Paving Projects
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has several active work zones today that may impact your travel times. Motorists are advised to expect delays and consider alternate routes in the following areas:
- Georgia Avenue NW: Paving operations are currently underway between Howard Place NW and Euclid Street NW, as well as segments between Aspen Street and Quackenbos Street. Expect lane shifts and temporary closures.
- 16th Street NW: Roadway restoration continues between Colorado Avenue NW and Arkansas Avenue NW. This is a high-traffic corridor, so budget extra time if traveling through Ward 4.
- Connecticut Avenue NW: The Deckover project remains active. Service lanes are closed from Q Street to Dupont Circle, significantly affecting local access and parking in the area.
- Benning Road NE: Utility relocation work is ongoing between 34th Street NE and Minnesota Avenue NE. Expect daytime, off-peak lane closures as crews prepare for the upcoming bridge replacement project.
- Independence Avenue: Sidewalk repairs are impacting the SW corridor from 9th to 12th Street, while Washington Gas utility repairs have closed westbound lanes in the 100 block of Independence Avenue SE.
Public Transit and Metrorail Updates
Metrorail service is currently reported as running smoothly on all lines for the Friday morning commute. However, riders must prepare for significant service disruptions starting late tonight. In preparation for the Crystal City second entrance construction, the Potomac Yard, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, and Crystal City stations will be closed this weekend, March 7-8. Free shuttle buses will be provided, but airport travelers should allow at least 30 minutes of additional travel time.
In addition, the back elevator at Mt. Vernon Square remains out of service for rehabilitation, and commuters at Tenleytown-AU and Judiciary Square should be mindful of ongoing escalator replacement projects.
Public Safety and Weekend Events
Commuters and residents in the Navy Yard and U Street corridor should be aware that DC Police have announced juvenile curfew zones starting tonight at 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Drivers in these areas may see an increased police presence. Finally, look ahead to Saturday morning, as the FITDC HerStory 5K will cause rolling road closures near Constitution Avenue starting early March 7.
