District Government Under Modified Posture

Mayor Muriel Bowser has announced that the District of Columbia government will operate in a modified posture on Monday, January 26, 2026, due to ongoing winter weather conditions involving significant snow and ice accumulation. Under this posture, all essential employees must report to work as regularly scheduled. Non-essential employees who are able to perform their duties remotely are directed to do so. Public-facing, non-essential in-person services will be closed for the duration of the day to ensure the safety of both residents and city staff.

Snow Emergency and Parking Restrictions

A citywide snow emergency remains in effect through Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. Residents are reminded that parking is strictly prohibited on designated snow emergency routes while the emergency is active. Vehicles parked on these routes are subject to ticketing and towing to ensure that plow crews can clear primary thoroughfares effectively. To locate a towed vehicle, owners should contact the Towed Vehicle Locator office. Additionally, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has suspended all non-emergency construction work and has deactivated reversible lane operations on Canal Road, Rock Creek Parkway, and 16th Street NW for the day.

DPW Service Adjustments

The Department of Public Works (DPW) has announced that there will be no trash, recycling, or food waste collection on Monday, January 26. Residents should expect rolling delays throughout the week as crews navigate icy conditions in residential alleys. Furthermore, the annual leaf collection program is officially suspended until further notice. Residents are required by law to clear snow and ice from sidewalks surrounding their property within the first eight hours of daylight after a storm ends to ensure safe passage for pedestrians.

Education and Community Meetings

District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) students are not in session today, Monday, January 26, for a previously scheduled professional development and records day. While teachers will perform their duties remotely, school buildings are closed. In the community, the Ward 3 Team Meeting and the DC Local Government Working Group meeting have transitioned to a virtual-only format. Residents interested in participating in these sessions should access the official community portals for digital meeting links.

Winter Health Advisory

DC Health continues to monitor elevated levels of respiratory virus activity, including seasonal influenza, COVID-19, and RSV. While regional data indicates a slight decrease in new cases over the last week, health officials urge residents to stay up to date with vaccinations. Those experiencing mild symptoms are encouraged to rest and hydrate at home, while individuals at high risk for complications should contact their healthcare provider early to discuss treatment options.
