Crash reported near Georgia Avenue and Upshur Street NW

District police are searching for a commercial trash truck after two adult women were struck in a hit-and-run Friday afternoon in the Petworth neighborhood of Northwest Washington, D.C. One of the women died, a Ward 4 elected official said in a public statement.

The collision was reported around 2 p.m. at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Upshur Street NW, a busy corridor lined with retail, bus stops and heavy weekday traffic. The vehicle involved fled the scene, prompting investigators to issue a lookout for the truck.

Vehicle description released as investigation continues

Authorities described the suspected vehicle as a white-and-green trash truck marked with the number “244” and the name “WB Waste Solutions LLC” on the side. Police have not released the victims’ names, their conditions beyond the reported fatality, or additional details about how the crash occurred.

Investigators have also not said whether the truck was operating on a scheduled route at the time, whether it was carrying a load, or whether driver identification has been developed through company records, GPS systems, or nearby camera footage.

Company footprint and potential investigative steps

WB Waste Solutions is a private waste and recycling business that operates in the District, Maryland and Virginia. In 2025, Waste Management (WM) announced it purchased commercial and industrial assets of WB Waste, effective May 1, 2025, and indicated service would continue to customers across the region.

In cases involving commercial fleets, investigators typically move quickly to preserve vehicle and driver records and to determine whether telematics, dispatch logs, route assignments, or onboard cameras exist. Police have not publicly detailed which investigative methods are being used in this case.

Police are urging anyone with information about the vehicle or the crash to contact investigators.

Public safety context

The fatality adds to renewed attention on pedestrian safety along major arterials in the District, where conflicts between turning vehicles, large trucks, buses and foot traffic are common. Officials have not indicated whether roadway design, visibility, speed, or signal timing played a role in Friday’s crash, and no enforcement or administrative actions have been announced.

The investigation remained active Friday afternoon, with authorities focused on locating the truck and identifying the driver.
