Official Notices: Cold Weather Advisory and Super Bowl Sunday Safety Alerts

Severe Weather and Cold Advisory
The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for the District of Columbia, which remains in effect until 10:00 a.m. today, Sunday, February 8, 2026. Residents are warned of dangerously low wind chills reaching as low as 13 degrees below zero. Although the high wind warnings from Saturday have subsided, the District remains under extreme cold conditions that can lead to hypothermia and the refreezing of surfaces from recent winter storms. Mayor Muriel Bowser has urged residents to limit outdoor exposure and to call the Shelter Hotline at 202-399-7093 or dial 311 if they see individuals in need of a warm place to stay or accessible transportation to a shelter.
Public Safety: Super Bowl SoberRide Campaign
In anticipation of Super Bowl LX celebrations this evening, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and the Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) are activating the 2026 SoberRide campaign. Starting at 8:00 p.m. today, February 8, and continuing until 4:00 a.m. Monday morning, area residents aged 21 and older can receive a free Lyft ride, up to a 15 dollar value, by entering the official promotional code in the Lyft app's payment tab. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) will be conducting increased high-visibility DUI enforcement operations across the city to ensure road safety during this traditionally high-risk period.
DC Water Service and Infrastructure Updates
DC Water has issued two critical notifications for today regarding utility services and infrastructure:
- Maintenance Window: Scheduled system maintenance will impact digital services early this morning. Online payment processing via the My DC Water portal and the Self-Service Hotline will be temporarily unavailable from 3:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. today. The Emergency Command Center remains fully operational for water and sewer emergencies.
- Potomac Interceptor Cleanup: Remediation efforts continue on the damaged Potomac Interceptor sewer line following a 72-inch pipe collapse. Crews are working to remove debris and obstructions near the Clara Barton Parkway and C & O Canal National Historical Park. While cleanup is ongoing, residents are advised to stay clear of the immediate work zones.
Council and Health Notifications
The D.C. Council continues its Fiscal Years 2025 and 2026 Performance Oversight Hearings through early March. While no hearings are convened on Sunday, the public is encouraged to review upcoming schedules for health and education agency oversight sessions starting Monday. Additionally, DC Health reminds residents that February is Children's Dental Health Month. This initiative highlights the importance of oral hygiene and preventive care for youth, specifically focusing on expanding access to screenings and sealants through the School-Based Oral Health Program.
