Morning Traffic Overview

Commuters in the District should prepare for a mix of emergency repairs and ongoing infrastructure projects this Monday, February 23, 2026. While the morning rush is moving steadily on the major interstates, several local arteries are seeing significant disruptions. The most critical impact remains at 22nd Street NW, where emergency sewer repairs by DC Water have forced a total closure between Massachusetts Avenue and P Street. Both northbound and southbound lanes are restricted, and motorists are being diverted to Connecticut Avenue or 21st Street. Additionally, a disabled vehicle has been reported in the 5600 block of Georgia Avenue NW, causing localized delays between Madison and Longfellow Streets.

Major Roadworks and Utility Repairs

Several long-term projects continue to influence traffic patterns across the city today:

  • Pennsylvania Avenue SE: Work is ongoing between 27th Street SE and Alabama Avenue SE. Crews are currently focused on roadway improvements, leading to intermittent lane closures throughout the midday hours.
  • Independence Avenue SE: The 100 block of Independence Avenue SE remains closed to westbound traffic between 1st and 2nd Streets due to urgent utility repairs by Washington Gas. Drivers should use C Street or Pennsylvania Avenue as alternatives.
  • Connecticut Avenue NW: The Deckover construction near Dupont Circle continues to restrict service lanes between Q Street and the circle itself.
  • Benning Road NE: Expect advance utility relocations near the Benning Road bridges. While most work is occurring off-peak, lane shifts are in place near the DC-295 interchange.

Metrorail and Public Transit Updates

WMATA reports that Metrorail is running on a standard Monday schedule, following a series of weekend closures at the Crystal City station. While Crystal City has reopened for the weekday commute, riders should be aware of ongoing construction materials near the new mezzanine site. At the Navy Yard-Ballpark station, the Half Street entrance remains closed for a total escalator replacement project; riders are directed to use the New Jersey Avenue entrance. Furthermore, the back elevator at Mt. Vernon Square Station is out of service for rehabilitation through April, so passengers requiring elevator access should plan for extra time or use the front entrance facilities.

Looking Ahead: State of the Union Preps

Commuters should also be mindful of the upcoming State of the Union Address scheduled for Tuesday evening. While the heaviest security perimeters and road closures around the U.S. Capitol will not take full effect until tomorrow, some initial staging and parking restrictions may appear late this evening. Major closures on First Street and Constitution Avenue are expected to begin at midnight, so those planning a late-night commute through Capitol Hill should consider alternate routes through the 3rd Street Tunnel.
