Commemorative Peace Walk and Parade

The 21st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Peace Walk and Parade remains the heart of the District's celebrations today, Monday, January 19, 2026. This historic event, which serves as a cornerstone of the Anacostia community, begins with a Peace Rally at 9:30 AM at the intersection of Firth Sterling Avenue and Sumner Road SE. The official Peace Walk steps off at 10:30 AM, winding through the streets of Southeast Washington before the main parade procession begins at 11:00 AM. This year's theme, “The Struggle is Real! THE FIGHT IS STILL!”, invites residents from all eight wards to celebrate the progress made while acknowledging the work ahead.

Wreath-Laying Ceremony at the MLK Memorial

For those seeking a moment of reflection on the National Mall, the 15th Annual MLK Day Wreath-Laying Ceremony is taking place at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. Gathered around the “Stone of Hope” statue, attendees will hear a keynote address by Senator Angela Alsobrooks. The ceremony is set to include powerful musical performances by the Ebenezer United Methodist Mass Choir and celebrated gospel soloists Ricky Dillard and Byron Cage. This public gathering offers a poignant tribute to Dr. King’s social justice legacy and is free for all visitors.

'Let Freedom Ring' Concert at Howard Theatre

In a notable shift for the 2026 holiday, the annual “Let Freedom Ring” concert has moved from its traditional home to the historic Howard Theatre. This year’s musical tribute features a headline performance by Academy Award and Grammy-winning artist Common. Produced by Georgetown University, the event honors the spirit of the civil rights movement through song and spoken word. Doors open early for this ticketed but free event, which remains one of the most anticipated cultural highlights of the MLK weekend.

Exhibitions and Community Engagement

The District's cultural institutions are offering several specialized programs today:

  • National Museum of African American History and Culture: Visit the new “At the Vanguard” exhibit, which highlights the profound history and impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) through over 100 historical artifacts.
  • MLK Memorial Library: The downtown library is hosting the “Freedom and Resistance” visual art exhibition. Inspired by The 1619 Project, this showcase features works from ten Black artists exploring themes of slavery and liberation.
  • Health and Wellness Fair: Following the parade, a community health fair is being held at the PNC parking lot on MLK Avenue SE, offering free medical screenings and resources for local residents.
