Major Metro Station Closures and Strategic Roadworks: Sunday Commute Guide

Weekend Travel Advisory: Major Metro Closures and Utility Repairs

Commuters and visitors in the District this Sunday, March 8, 2026, should prepare for significant disruptions on the Blue and Yellow lines, along with several long-term road improvement projects. Whether you are heading to a game at Capital One Arena or navigating the downtown core, planning extra travel time is essential as both rail and road networks undergo critical maintenance and construction.

Metrorail Service Interruptions

The most substantial impact this weekend involves the Blue and Yellow Lines. Due to the ongoing Crystal City second entrance construction project, three major stations are completely closed today: Crystal City, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, and Potomac Yard. To accommodate travelers, Metro is operating free shuttle buses between Braddock Road and Pentagon City stations. Blue Line trains are running every 12 minutes between Franconia-Springfield and Braddock Road, and between Pentagon City and Downtown Largo. Yellow Line service is available every 12 minutes between Huntington and Braddock Road, and between Pentagon City and Greenbelt.

On the Red Line, passengers should expect delays as trains single-track between Medical Center and Friendship Heights for work related to the Purple Line project. Trains are scheduled to run every 8 minutes between Van Ness and Glenmont, but frequency drops to every 15 minutes for those traveling between Van Ness and Shady Grove. The Green, Orange, and Silver lines are maintaining normal Sunday service schedules today.

Road Closures and Construction Alerts

Motorists will encounter several active work zones across the city. A major emergency closure remains in effect on 22nd Street NW between P and Q streets. DC Water continues extensive repairs on a large sewer pipe, and the roadway remains unstable in certain sections. Detours are in place via Connecticut Avenue and 21st Street NW. Other notable impacts include:

  • Connecticut Avenue NW: Service lanes remain closed from Q Street to Dupont Circle for the ongoing Deckover project.
  • Benning Road: Expect intermittent lane closures near the bridges for advanced utility relocations related to transportation improvements.
  • Georgia Avenue NW: Roadwork continues between Girard Street and Howard Place, reducing lane capacity for local traffic.
  • Independence Avenue SW: Sidewalk and roadway repairs between 9th and 12th Streets may cause localized bottlenecks near the Smithsonian museums.

Public Transit and Local Events

Riders of the DC Streetcar are reminded that Sunday service was eliminated earlier this year as part of the system's transition plan. Those traveling the H Street Corridor should utilize WMATA's D20 bus or alternate Metrobus routes. Additionally, expect increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic near Capital One Arena for the Harlem Globetrotters' 100 Year Tour and in the Congress Heights area as the CAA Championships continue at CareFirst Arena. Heavy congestion is expected in these neighborhoods throughout the afternoon and early evening hours.
