Commuter Outlook for Wednesday, February 4, 2026

Good morning, D.C. commuters. As we move into the middle of the first full week of February, traffic is currently moving at expected volumes on major arteries like I-395 and I-495. However, several localized infrastructure projects and transit service adjustments are set to impact travel times throughout the District today. This morning’s commute requires extra attention for those traveling through Northwest D.C. and those utilizing the Metrorail system near the Navy Yard.

Roadwork and Local Delays

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has confirmed that sidewalk repair work continues today as part of a citywide safety initiative. Commuters should prepare for potential bottlenecks in the following area:

  • Nebraska Avenue NW: Ongoing construction is active between Tenley Circle NW and Davenport Street NW. Motorists should expect temporary lane closures between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. While at least one travel lane will remain open in both directions, heavy congestion is anticipated during midday hours.
  • Parking Restrictions: Emergency “No Parking” signs are in effect within the work zone. DDOT advises that these restrictions are strictly enforced to allow for the movement of heavy machinery. Cyclists and pedestrians should also be prepared for sidewalk detours along this stretch of Nebraska Avenue.

Metrorail and Bus Service Alerts

As of early Wednesday morning, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) reports that most lines are running on schedule, with a few notable exceptions and ongoing projects:

  • Navy Yard-Ballpark Station: The Half Street entrance remains closed to accommodate a long-term escalator replacement project. This closure is expected to continue through March 2026. Commuters must use the New Jersey Avenue entrance to access the station and should allow for an additional five minutes to reach the platforms.
  • Blue and Yellow Lines: Residual delays have been noted following reports of a track obstruction earlier this week near the King Street-Old Town station. While service has been restored to regular intervals, minor gap-filling may cause intermittent 5 to 10-minute waits during the peak morning rush.
  • Metrobus: Seven active bus alerts are currently in effect across the system. Riders should check their specific routes via the SmarTrip app, as local utility repairs and minor road obstructions may necessitate temporary stops or detours.
  • Public Engagement: The WMATA Riders’ Advisory Council is scheduled to meet online this evening, February 4, at 6:00 p.m. to discuss upcoming service plans and regional transit infrastructure updates.

Long-Term Transit Planning

Commuters who utilize the DC Streetcar should take note of recent updates regarding the system's future. DDOT has reiterated that there are no current plans to extend operations beyond the scheduled closure on March 31, 2026. This spring marks the final full season for the H Street-Benning Road line. Additionally, looking ahead, DDOT will host public meetings on February 17 and 18 to discuss the 11th Street NW Multimodal Safety Project, which will impact bike lanes and traffic flow from L Street to Monroe Street in the coming year.
