Cold Weather Advisory and Black Ice Risks

Washington D.C. remains under a Cold Weather Advisory issued by the National Weather Service through 11:00 AM this morning, Saturday, January 31, 2026. With temperatures dipping into the low teens and wind chill values expected to reach below zero, commuters should be prepared for hazardous conditions. The primary concern for morning drivers is the presence of black ice on secondary roads and overpasses. While main thoroughfares have been treated, residual moisture from the recent winter storm may have refrozen overnight, creating slick patches that are difficult to see. Authorities advise motorists to reduce speeds and increase following distances, particularly on ramps and bridges which freeze faster than standard road surfaces.

Metrorail and Metrobus Service Alerts

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) reports several service adjustments and delays that will affect Saturday travelers. Commuters using the Green and Yellow lines should expect residual delays in both directions. These delays stem from earlier infrastructure issues involving a downed wire near West Hyattsville, which crews worked to resolve overnight. Additionally, the Yellow Line is currently operating between Huntington and Mount Vernon Square; passengers destined for stations further north must transfer to the Green Line at Fort Totten.

  • Navy Yard-Ballpark Station: The Half Street entrance remains closed due to an ongoing escalator replacement project. This closure is expected to last through March 2026. The New Jersey Avenue entrance remains open for all passengers.
  • Metrobus Detours: Several routes, including the P31, P33, and P35, are operating on snow detours or modified boarding patterns. For example, Route P31 is currently restricted to boarding and alighting at the lower level of the New Carrollton Station.
  • Elevator Outages: Minor elevator maintenance is reported at Union Station and Tenleytown-AU, though escalators remain available at these locations.

Roadwork and Regional Highway Conditions

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has warned that while interstates like I-66 and I-495 are largely clear, drivers will encounter narrower-than-usual lanes in some areas. Snow banks pushed to the shoulders during plowing operations may encroach on merging lanes and turn pockets. VDOT crews are continuing 12-hour shifts through the weekend to widen these paths. On I-66, motorists should watch for ongoing shoulder closures between Mile Markers 2 and 0 for long-term road improvement projects.

For those planning to travel south of the District today, be advised that a separate winter storm system is currently impacting Southern Virginia and the Hampton Roads area. Significant snowfall is expected in those regions, and VDOT urges travelers to monitor conditions along the entire length of their route before departing. If you must travel toward Richmond or Norfolk, ensure your vehicle is equipped with an emergency kit and full fuel tank, as delays in those regions are expected to be substantial throughout the afternoon.
