What happened

Washington police have opened a homicide investigation after a man was found dead in a Northwest Washington apartment during an early-morning fire response this week.

Firefighters and emergency crews responded at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday to a report of a fire in the 1400 block of Rhode Island Avenue NW. After extinguishing what fire officials described as a small blaze, responders discovered human remains inside a unit. Investigators later identified the victim as Syed Hammad Hussain, 40.

Cause of death and injuries documented by investigators

Authorities said the victim had injuries consistent with blunt-force trauma as well as thermal injuries. Detectives treated the case as suspicious from the outset and, on Thursday, police said they now believe Hussain was killed.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is expected to determine the official cause and manner of death, which can clarify whether death resulted from traumatic injuries, fire-related injuries, or a combination of factors.

Investigation status

As of Thursday, police said no suspect had been identified. Detectives continued canvassing for witnesses and reviewing potential evidence associated with the building and surrounding area.

Investigators are asking anyone with information related to the death to contact police at 202-727-9099. Tips can also be submitted by text to 50411.

What is known about the scene

The incident was initially handled as a fire response before the discovery inside the unit shifted the focus to a potential criminal investigation. Officials have not publicly detailed where in the apartment the victim was found, whether the fire originated in the unit, or whether accelerants or other signs of intentional burning have been identified.

Authorities also have not released information about forced entry, missing property, surveillance footage, or whether the victim had recently been in contact with family, neighbors, or co-workers. Those details are often developed in the first days of a homicide investigation and may be withheld while detectives work to identify and locate a suspect.
