Recovery update follows November ambush near Farragut West Metro

The family of Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, a West Virginia National Guard member critically wounded in a shooting in Washington, D.C., has described incremental medical progress as he continues a lengthy recovery that has moved from acute care toward rehabilitation.

Wolfe, 24, was shot on November 26, 2025, during a daytime attack near the Farragut West Metro Station, at the intersection of 17th and I Streets NW, a busy corridor several blocks from the White House complex. A second service member, Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, 20, was also shot in the attack and died the following day. Both were transported to MedStar Washington Hospital Center after the shooting.

Family says Wolfe has transitioned to the next phase of care

In statements released through the hospital, Wolfe’s parents, Jason and Melody Wolfe, said their son has shown signs of improvement after suffering a head wound. Medical updates provided publicly by elected officials in West Virginia in early December referenced responses to basic commands and small movements that clinicians treated as meaningful indicators during critical care.

By mid-December, hospital updates indicated Wolfe could breathe on his own and was able to stand with assistance, developments that supported a transition from acute hospital care to inpatient rehabilitation. The family has not disclosed where rehabilitation is taking place and has asked for privacy as the next stage of treatment begins.

“Please continue to lift Andy up in prayer as he begins a long and tough rehabilitation,” the family said in a statement released through the hospital.

What investigators and court filings say about the attack

Federal prosecutors allege the attack was carried out by Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, an Afghan national who had been living in Washington state. Authorities say Lakanwal traveled across the country before the shooting and opened fire without provocation with a .357-caliber revolver. Investigators have publicly described the incident as an ambush-style attack.

Lakanwal has pleaded not guilty. Court proceedings have included discussions of whether prosecutors will pursue additional charges that could affect sentencing exposure, including the possibility of death-penalty-eligible counts. A future court date has been set for May 6, 2026.

Broader context: Guard deployment and public safety posture in the District

The two service members were among more than 2,000 National Guard troops deployed to Washington, D.C., in 2025 as part of a federal initiative tied to public safety operations in the city. After the shooting, federal officials expanded security measures for Guard personnel working in the District, including changes to arming and patrol practices alongside local law enforcement.
