District Under State of Emergency as Winter Storm Hits; ANC1A to Meet Today

Mayor Muriel Bowser has officially declared a State of Emergency and a concurrent Snow Emergency for Washington, D.C., as a significant winter storm continues to impact the region. The emergency measures, which went into effect over the weekend, are slated to remain active until Tuesday morning. Residents are experiencing the peak of the storm today, Sunday, January 25, 2026, with snowfall accumulations expected to be at their highest throughout the morning hours, accompanied by dangerously low temperatures.

The Mayor’s declaration includes several critical directives for residents and commuters to ensure public safety and facilitate city-wide clearing operations:

  • Snow Emergency Routes: Motorists are strictly prohibited from parking on designated snow emergency routes. The District has warned that any vehicles remaining on these routes will be ticketed and towed to allow plows and emergency vehicles clear passage.
  • National Guard Support: Mayor Bowser has requested the assistance of the District of Columbia National Guard. Personnel have been deployed with high-ground-clearance vehicles to support first responders and ensure that emergency services can reach all wards despite the accumulation.
  • Utility and Public Safety: Residents are encouraged to stay indoors as wind chills drop into the single digits. The District has also reminded tenants of their rights regarding heat and utility services during extreme cold.

Despite the severe weather conditions, the Advisory Neighborhood Commission 1A (ANC1A), representing the Columbia Heights neighborhood, is scheduled to hold a community meeting today from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. This session provides a vital opportunity for residents to engage with commissioners regarding the local response to the storm and to discuss community advocacy priorities for the coming month. Given the ongoing Snow Emergency, residents are encouraged to monitor official ANC communication channels for updates regarding potential shifts to a virtual meeting format.

In the broader political landscape, the District government is operating under a unique transitional period. Following the resignation of Kenyan McDuffie from his At-Large Council seat on January 5 to pursue a mayoral campaign, the Council recently appointed Doni Crawford as the interim councilmember. Today’s emergency management serves as one of the first major tests for the revised Council and the Bowser administration as the 2026 political season begins to take shape.

On the legislative front, the Council recently processed the Soul of the City Business Improvement District Emergency Amendment Act of 2026 to support local economic hubs. While federal activity at the U.S. Capitol is quiet today with no scheduled committee hearings, the Office of Personnel Management has already announced that federal offices in the D.C. region will be closed on Monday, January 26, to allow for continued snow removal and safe travel for the workforce.
