Infrastructure Update: Potomac Interceptor Repairs Reach Critical Phase

DC Water officials confirmed today, March 8, 2026, that emergency repairs to the collapsed Potomac Interceptor sewer line remain on schedule for completion by mid-month. Following the major collapse on January 19 along the Clara Barton Parkway, the utility has successfully maintained a record of zero wastewater overflows into the Potomac River since February 8. Crews are currently finishing the application of geopolymer lining—a material comparable in strength to concrete—to reinforce the upstream sections of the damaged pipe. A bypass pumping system remains active within the C&O Canal to manage wastewater flow while repairs continue. Full functionality is expected to be restored by the end of next week.

Public Health: Potomac River Advisory and Water Monitoring

While DC Health officially lifted the general river advisory on March 2, residents are reminded that intensive water quality monitoring remains in effect to ensure the safety of local waterways. In coordination with the Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE), DC Water has expanded its sampling network to ten locations. This expansion includes a new sampling site at Sycamore Island near the Lock 6 feeder channel. Authorities indicate that while tidal action initially moved some pollutants near the Frederick Douglass Bridge, current testing shows water quality levels have returned to seasonally typical ranges. However, environmental restoration of the impacted shoreline and parklands is expected to continue for several months.

Public Service: Georgetown DMV Remains Offline

The District Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) reminds residents that the Georgetown Service Center remains closed to the public until further notice. The facility suffered significant flooding following a major water main break on February 5. Officials are still assessing the long-term structural impacts of the flooding. Residents requiring in-person services are directed to utilize other regional service centers. Most routine transactions, including license renewals and vehicle registrations, can be completed via the DC DMV mobile app or the official website to avoid unnecessary travel.

Transportation: Ongoing Road and Sidewalk Improvements

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is continuing several infrastructure projects that may impact local travel through the coming week. Key active work zones include:

  • Sidewalk Restoration: Repairs are ongoing on Nebraska Avenue NW between Tenley Circle and Davenport Street, and on Independence Avenue SW between 9th and 12th Streets.
  • Roadway Projects: Maintenance continues on Pennsylvania Avenue SE from 27th Street to Alabama Avenue, and on Georgia Avenue NW near Howard Place.
  • Connecticut Avenue NW: Deckover work remains in progress, with service lane closures currently in effect from Q Street to Dupont Circle.

City Council: Performance Oversight Season Concludes

The DC Council has officially concluded its scheduled performance oversight hearings for the 2025-2026 fiscal cycle as of Friday, March 6. The Council is now transitioning into the fiscal year 2027 budget oversight period. Residents are encouraged to monitor the Legislative Information Management System (LIMS) for updates on the new scrutinized protocols regarding federal law enforcement oversight and upcoming budget work sessions.
