D.C. hotel-room murder case ends with 40-year sentence for man who stabbed visitor 34 times

Sentencing follows March 2023 killing at Northeast Washington’s Ivy City Hotel
A D.C. Superior Court judge has sentenced George Sydnor, 46, to 40 years in prison for the killing of Christy Bautista, a 31-year-old Virginia resident who was attacked in her hotel room while visiting Washington for a concert.
The sentence, imposed on January 16, 2026, includes five years of supervised release after the prison term. Sydnor pleaded guilty on October 17, 2025, to first-degree murder while armed, a charge that reflects a premeditated killing under District law.
What investigators say happened at the Ivy City Hotel
Authorities said Bautista arrived at the Ivy City Hotel on New York Avenue NE on March 31, 2023, after traveling from Harrisonburg, Virginia. After checking in, she began unloading personal items from her car.
Investigators said surveillance video later captured Sydnor arriving on a rideshare bicycle and moving toward a cluster of ground-floor rooms near Bautista’s room. Those rooms were accessible from the street. Prosecutors said Sydnor positioned the bicycle outside Bautista’s window, stood at the door as if listening, then entered abruptly and shut the door behind him. Bautista was stabbed 34 times, with wounds concentrated in the neck and back, authorities said.
Hotel surveillance audio captured loud impacts shortly after the entry, and a witness reported hearing a woman scream for help, prosecutors said. Police arrived within minutes and found Sydnor inside the room, with blood on his hands, while Bautista was on the floor. Reports from the investigation described Sydnor as smoking a cigarette at the scene.
The killing occurred inside a room on the ground floor, a layout that investigators emphasized was directly accessible from the street.

Release status at the time of the attack
Authorities said Sydnor was on release in connection with an attempted robbery case when the March 2023 killing occurred. The investigation and prosecution involved the Metropolitan Police Department and federal prosecutors assigned to violent-crime cases in the District.
The case has drawn attention to how quickly violence can unfold in places typically viewed as temporary refuges for travelers, while court records trace a detailed sequence of movements captured on surveillance footage in the minutes leading up to the fatal attack.
