DC Government Shifts to Modified Posture as Mayor Bowser Issues Weather Advisory

District Operations Shift to Remote Status Amid Winter Storm
Mayor Muriel Bowser has announced that the District of Columbia government is operating in a modified posture today, Monday, January 26, 2026, in response to severe winter weather conditions. Following a weekend of significant ice and snow accumulation, the Mayor urged residents to remain off the roads as crews work to clear emergency routes. Under the current modified posture, essential employees are required to report to their stations as scheduled, while non-essential employees who can perform their duties remotely have been instructed to do so. All non-essential in-person government services are closed for the day.
Impact on City Services and Public Schools
The weather has significantly disrupted local infrastructure and services. The Department of Public Works (DPW) confirmed that there will be no trash, recycling, or food waste collection today. Residents have been warned to expect rolling delays throughout the week as crews navigate icy conditions in narrow alleys. Furthermore, a snow emergency remains in effect through tomorrow morning, Tuesday, January 27, at 9:30 a.m. Motorists are reminded that parking on designated snow emergency routes is strictly prohibited to allow for continuous plowing; vehicles in violation are subject to towing and heavy fines.
Regarding education, District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) students were already scheduled to be out of the classroom today for a professional development and records day. However, due to the modified posture, educators and staff are performing these professional duties remotely rather than reporting to school buildings. Public charter schools have been advised to follow similar protocols for in-person closures.
Evening Session on DC Autonomy and Home Rule
Despite the citywide shift to remote operations, a significant local government working group meeting is still scheduled for this evening. The Free DC Project is hosting a session titled "DC Local Government Meeting - January 2026" from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in Room 401-A. The session is expected to focus on long-term strategies for DC autonomy and Home Rule, particularly as the District enters a pivotal election year. This meeting comes as the city begins preparations for the June 16, 2026, primary elections, which will see a transition in leadership following Mayor Bowser’s announced retirement at the end of her current term.
