Suspect taken into custody out of state after early-morning homicide call in Northwest

A 35-year-old man was arrested in Middletown, Connecticut, in connection with the fatal shooting of a woman inside a residence in Washington, D.C., authorities said Tuesday. The arrest follows a homicide investigation that began in the early hours of February 2, 2026, in the District’s Columbia Heights neighborhood.

Police said officers were dispatched at about 3:07 a.m. after a 911 hang-up call from the 3100 block of 16th Street NW. Inside a residence, officers found an adult woman suffering from a gunshot wound. Fire and emergency medical personnel responded and pronounced her dead at the scene.

The victim was identified as 27-year-old Nyesha Walden-Hatcher, who lived in Northwest Washington.

Arrest executed by Connecticut fugitive task force

Investigators obtained an arrest warrant through D.C. Superior Court. On February 10, members of the Connecticut Violent Crimes Fugitive Task Force located and arrested Tyjuan Bazemore, police said. Authorities did not provide details on how Bazemore was located in Connecticut or how long he had been outside the District.

Police said Bazemore is expected to go through an extradition process before being returned to Washington, where he will be formally charged with second-degree murder while armed.

What is known—and what remains unclear

Authorities have not publicly released information about a possible motive, the circumstances leading to the shooting, or the relationship—if any—between Bazemore and Walden-Hatcher. Police also have not said whether additional suspects are being sought, whether a firearm has been recovered, or whether anyone else was inside the home at the time of the shooting.

  • Incident location: 3100 block of 16th Street NW.

  • Initial call: 911 hang-up reported at about 3:07 a.m. on February 2, 2026.

  • Victim: Nyesha Walden-Hatcher, 27, of Northwest Washington.

  • Arrest: Tyjuan Bazemore, 35, taken into custody in Middletown, Connecticut, on February 10, 2026.

  • Expected charge: second-degree murder while armed, following extradition to Washington.

Next steps in the case

Extradition proceedings typically involve court hearings in the arresting jurisdiction and coordination between jurisdictions before a suspect is transported. Police said Bazemore will be formally charged after he is returned to the District.

Police described the case as a homicide investigation and said the suspect is being held pending extradition to Washington.

Additional court filings and charging documents are expected to provide more detail on the allegations, including the evidence supporting the arrest warrant and the investigative timeline.
