Emergency Traffic Alert: State of the Union Road Closures

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and the United States Capitol Police have announced extensive road closures across the city for Tuesday, February 24, 2026, in preparation for the State of the Union Address scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Residents and commuters should expect significant delays and are encouraged to use public transit where possible.

  • Early Morning Closures (12:01 a.m.): First Street between Constitution Avenue NW and Independence Avenue SW, Pennsylvania Avenue between 3rd Street NW and First Street NW, and Maryland Avenue between 3rd Street SW and First Street SW are closed to all traffic.
  • Afternoon Restrictions (1:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.): Closures will expand to include East Capitol Street between First and 2nd Streets and New Jersey Avenue between C Street NW and Constitution Avenue NW.
  • Evening Security Perimeter (7:00 p.m.): Full security lockdown will take effect for First Street between Columbus Circle NE and D Street NE, and 2nd Street between Constitution Avenue NE and Independence Avenue SE.

DC Health Advisory: Measles Exposure Sites

DC Health continues to monitor a public health advisory regarding multiple confirmed cases of measles within the District. Health officials have identified several exposure sites where residents may have come into contact with the virus. Contagious individuals reportedly visited the following locations during the late January and early February windows:

  • Children’s National Medical Center emergency department.
  • Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
  • Select transit lines on the Washington Metro and Union Station.

Residents who are not fully vaccinated or are immunocompromised and were at these locations should monitor for symptoms, including high fever, cough, and a distinctive rash, and contact their healthcare provider before visiting a clinic in person.

Agency Service Updates and Infrastructure Repairs

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) reminds residents that the Georgetown DMV Service Center remains closed until further notice. This closure follows a major water main break on February 5 that resulted in significant flooding and structural damage. All scheduled appointments for this location have been canceled, and residents are directed to use the mobile app or visit the Southwest or Rhode Island Avenue service centers.

Additionally, DC Water is providing updates on the Potomac Interceptor sewer line repair. Emergency work continues along the Clara Barton Parkway following a pipe collapse earlier this year. While bypass systems are active, residents should note that the northbound lanes of 22nd Street NW between P and Q Streets remain closed for emergency sewer pipe stabilization.
