City Service Alert: Trash Collection Resumes and Legislative Oversight Hearings Begin

Public Service Announcement: Department of Public Works Operations
The District of Columbia Department of Public Works (DPW) has announced that regular residential trash and recycling collections will officially resume on Monday, February 2, 2026. This return to the normal schedule follows a period of service delays caused by recent inclement winter weather. Residents who typically receive frontside or alley collection on Mondays are instructed to place their waste and recycling bins at the curb or in designated alley spaces no later than 6:00 a.m. to ensure pickup.
While crews have been working around the clock to clear pathways through city alleys using specialized equipment, officials remind residents that if their trash is not collected on the regularly scheduled day, they should leave the bins out as they will be prioritized for collection the following day. Additionally, the city’s enforcement of sidewalk snow and ice clearing will resume today. Property owners are required to clear their respective sidewalks to ensure safe passage for pedestrians; failure to comply may result in fines as the temporary enforcement pause has expired.
DC Council: Performance Oversight Hearings
The Council of the District of Columbia is currently conducting its annual Performance Oversight Hearings for the Fiscal Year 2025-2026. These hearings, which began in late January and are scheduled to continue through March 6, 2026, provide a critical opportunity for the public to offer testimony regarding the performance of various city agencies. On Monday, February 2, residents are encouraged to participate in the ongoing review process by submitting written testimony or signing up to testify virtually or in person through the DC Council Hearing Portal.
Furthermore, Chairman Phil Mendelson has issued a notice for an additional meeting of the Committee of the Whole, slated to occur early this week, to discuss urgent legislative measures including budget enhancements and residential building permit classifications. Legislative sessions remain open to the public for viewing via the Council’s official broadcast channels.
DC Health and Wellness Advisory
DC Health has issued a notice confirming that the District’s official immunization schedule for school-aged children remains unchanged. Despite recent shifts in federal recommendations, the local health department mandates that families continue to follow the existing vaccine requirements to maintain compliance with school attendance regulations. Parents can utilize the "Docket" mobile application to access their children’s immunization records in real-time. Additionally, all DC Health Wellness Centers and Vital Records offices have returned to standard operating hours following last week’s weather-related modifications.
