City Notice: Winter Weather Service Delays and Public Health Advisories

Official City Operating Status: Weather Delays
The District of Columbia is currently under a winter weather advisory effective through 10:00 a.m. today, Monday, February 23, 2026. Following reports of two to four inches of snow accumulation across the region, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has announced that federal agencies in the Washington, D.C. area will open on a two-hour delay. Employees are advised to exercise caution during the morning commute and have the option for unscheduled leave or telework where applicable.
Local educational institutions, including American University, have also adjusted schedules, with a delayed opening set for 11:00 a.m. Residents are encouraged to monitor the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) updates for road treatment progress and to clear sidewalks of snow and ice as required by municipal regulations.
Public Health Alert: Measles Exposure and Water Quality
DC Health continues to investigate multiple confirmed cases of measles involving individuals who visited high-traffic locations while contagious. Residents and visitors who were present at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Children’s National Hospital, or major transit hubs including Union Station and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in late January and early February should remain vigilant. The 21-day incubation period remains active for many through the end of February. Symptoms include high fever, cough, and a characteristic rash; those suspected of exposure are urged to call their healthcare provider before visiting a facility.
Additionally, a health advisory remains in effect for the Potomac River following a major sewer line collapse earlier this month. While drinking water remains safe, residents are strongly advised to avoid all contact with river water due to elevated E. coli levels. This includes a prohibition on boating, fishing, and wading. Pet owners should keep animals leashed and away from the shoreline until the advisory is lifted in March.
Government Meetings and Election Notices
Several public body meetings are scheduled for today, February 23. The D.C. Retail Water and Sewer Rates Committee will convene at 9:30 a.m. to discuss ongoing infrastructure and rate adjustments. This evening, the Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs (MOAPIA) will meet at 6:30 p.m. at One Judiciary Square, while the D.C. Public Charter School Board (PCSB) will hold its monthly board meeting virtually at 6:30 p.m.
Finally, the D.C. Board of Elections announces that today marks the first day nominating petitions may be filed for the June 16, 2026, Primary Election. Candidates for the Council of the District of Columbia and other local offices may begin submitting their documentation at the Board’s official offices during regular business hours.
