City Notice: Presidents’ Day Holiday Service Adjustments and Health Alerts

Official Holiday Service Adjustments
In observance of the Presidents’ Day holiday on Monday, February 16, 2026, the District of Columbia government has announced several modifications to city services. Most administrative offices, including the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the Department of Employment Services, and the DC Health Vital Records Division, are closed today. Residents are encouraged to use online portals for essential filings and document requests where available. Normal business hours for all agencies will resume on Tuesday, February 17.
Sanitation and Recycling Schedule
The Department of Public Works (DPW) is operating on a one-day slide schedule for all residential waste collections this week. Trash, recycling, and food waste collections scheduled for Monday, February 16, will instead be collected on Tuesday, February 17. This delay will continue throughout the week, with Friday collections occurring on Saturday. Additionally, the Fort Totten Transfer Station is closed to the public today. Residents are reminded that holiday tree and greenery collection remains active through the end of the month for all DPW-serviced households.
Health Advisory: Measles Exposure Alert
DC Health has issued an urgent advisory following confirmed measles exposures at several locations within the District. Individuals who visited the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, or used the DC Metro system between late January and early February should monitor for symptoms. The 21-day monitoring window remains active through February 23 for those potentially exposed at Children’s National Hospital on February 2. Symptoms include high fever, cough, and a distinctive rash. Residents who are not fully vaccinated or show symptoms should contact their healthcare provider immediately and avoid public spaces.
Emergency Shelter and Hypothermia Alerts
Due to persistent winter temperatures, the District’s hypothermia alert remains in effect. All low-barrier shelters for individuals experiencing homelessness are operating on a 24-hour schedule today. Specific hypothermia centers, including Eve’s Place and the 801 East Day Center, will remain open until Tuesday morning. Residents seeking transportation to emergency shelter for themselves or others should contact the DC Shelter Hotline at 202-399-7093 or call 311.
Utility Update: Potomac Interceptor Repairs
DC Water continues to manage repairs on the Potomac Interceptor sewer line following a structural collapse. While system capacity has been increased through the installation of high-capacity bypass pumps, officials warn that the potential for overflow events remains until a steel bulkhead is installed later this month. Residents are advised to monitor official water quality updates, though current sampling indicates that drinking water remains safe and unaffected by the ongoing maintenance work.
Education and Recreation Closures
All DC Public Schools (DCPS) are closed today for the holiday. Similarly, the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) has closed all indoor aquatic centers, community centers, and administrative offices. Outdoor parks, playgrounds, and athletic courts remain open for public use. Most public libraries are closed, with the exception of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library and the Mt. Pleasant Library, which are open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
