A Frigid Start for the District

Washington D.C. residents woke up to some of the coldest temperatures of the season this Wednesday, January 21, 2026. Early morning readings plunged into the biting teens across the city, with outlying areas like Dulles reporting temperatures as low as 9 degrees. Despite the sub-freezing start, clear skies and light winds provided a calm, albeit frozen, commute for early risers. The biting morning chill served as a sharp reminder of the peak winter season, requiring heavy coats and thermal gear for anyone heading outdoors before the sun began its ascent.

Afternoon Warmup and Sunny Skies

As the day progresses, the sun is expected to provide some much-needed relief from the morning freeze. Meteorologists predict that morning temperatures will climb steadily through the 20s and into the low 30s by midday. By the afternoon, the District will see a transition to partly cloudy skies with highs reaching between 37 and 42 degrees. While still cold, the lack of significant wind chill during the peak hours will make the afternoon feel significantly more manageable than the morning hours.

Winds are expected to pick up slightly from the south and southwest during the afternoon, reaching speeds of 10 to 20 mph. These breezes are responsible for ushering in a brief period of moderating temperatures that will peak tomorrow before the next major cold front arrives.

Evening Forecast and Cloud Cover

The evening hours will bring a return of cloud cover as a weak system approaches from the west. Temperatures will hold steady in the mid-30s during the early evening before dipping back into the mid-20s to low 30s overnight. The southerly breeze will persist at 10 to 15 mph, preventing temperatures from crashing as low as they did on Tuesday night. Residents can expect a mostly cloudy sky through the overnight hours, which will act as a blanket to keep the surface slightly warmer than the previous night's clear-sky freeze.

Significant Weekend Storm Alert

While today offers a dry and relatively stable weather pattern, local forecasters are closely monitoring a massive winter storm brewing for the upcoming weekend. Current predictions indicate a major system will move into the Mid-Atlantic region starting late Saturday, with the heaviest impacts expected on Sunday, January 25. There is high confidence in a significant snow event, with some models suggesting the nation’s capital could see more than a foot of accumulation. Residents are advised to enjoy today’s sun and use the mild conditions on Thursday to prepare for potential travel disruptions and hazardous conditions arriving later this week.
