What passengers say happened

A late-night intercity bus trip scheduled to take passengers from New York City to Washington, D.C., ended instead at a Metrorail station in Northern Virginia after riders said a replacement driver refused to complete the planned drop-off in the District.

Passengers described the incident as beginning after a driver change during the trip. Several riders said they realized the coach was no longer headed toward the advertised Washington stops and that attempts to resolve the situation escalated into a prolonged confrontation between passengers and the driver.

Route confusion and an unexpected stop in Northern Virginia

The service involved was a BestBus run that typically serves Washington-area destinations including Union Station and the Dupont Circle area, along with some Northern Virginia locations. During the incident, riders said the coach bypassed the expected Washington arrival and continued toward Virginia.

Passengers reported that multiple people tried to clarify the destination and insisted the bus proceed to Union Station. Riders also said they contacted the company while the trip was ongoing in an attempt to provide real-time direction to the driver. Accounts describe the driver rejecting those instructions and, at points, attributing the mistake to passengers being “on the wrong bus.”

The bus ultimately stopped at the Vienna Metrorail station in Fairfax County, where passengers disembarked.

Safety concerns raised during the trip

Riders’ descriptions included concerns about driving behavior and the uncertainty created by not knowing where the bus would stop. Some passengers said they discussed contacting law enforcement while also expressing worry that a roadside stop could increase risk given the reported driving conditions.

No injuries were publicly confirmed in connection with the incident, but passengers characterized the experience as disruptive and alarming, particularly because it unfolded while the bus was in motion and involved disagreement over the destination.

Company response: refunds, vouchers, and an internal review

BestBus acknowledged an overnight incident involving a driver on a Washington-bound trip and said it opened an internal investigation reviewing driver conduct, operational procedures, and trip conditions. The company said the reported experience did not meet its service standards.

BestBus also said affected passengers received full refunds and a credit voucher for future travel, and that it would take corrective steps intended to prevent a recurrence.

Key points for travelers

  • Passengers reported the problem began after a mid-trip driver change and a dispute over the correct Washington drop-off.

  • The trip ended at the Vienna Metrorail station rather than at the planned District stops, according to rider accounts.

  • The company said it is investigating and issued refunds and vouchers to impacted customers.

BestBus said it is reviewing what happened and assessing operational and conduct-related factors tied to the trip.
