A Frigid Start in the District

Washington D.C. residents are waking up to a punishing arctic air mass this Tuesday, January 27, 2026. Following the departure of a major winter storm that blanketed the region over the weekend, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect throughout the District. Despite the appearance of clear, sunny skies, the morning hours are seeing temperatures hover around a bone-chilling 12°F. With a humidity level of 56% and steady northwesterly winds, the "feels like" temperature is bottoming out at 4°F, making any outdoor exposure hazardous without proper gear.

Afternoon Outlook: Bright but Bitter

As we move into the afternoon, the sun will remain visible, but it will provide little in the way of warmth. The high for today is expected to reach only 26°F. Forecasters predict that northwesterly winds will persist at speeds of 5 to 20 mph, keeping wind chill values in the low 10s even during the peak of the day. There is a slight 20% chance of passing snow flurries as energy from the departing storm system continues to swirl over the Mid-Atlantic. Residents are encouraged to check on neighbors and ensure that pets are kept indoors during these frigid conditions.

Evening and Overnight Drop

The mercury is set to plummet once again as the sun sets. The evening sky will remain mostly clear, but the lack of cloud cover will allow for significant radiational cooling. Temperatures are expected to return to the 12°F to 15°F range by late evening. Wind chills are projected to dip below zero tonight, potentially reaching as low as -10°F in more exposed areas of the city. The National Weather Service warns that these conditions can lead to frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

Warnings and Safety Measures

  • Cold Weather Advisory: Effective through Wednesday morning for the entire D.C. metropolitan area.
  • Wind Chill Hazards: Expect "feels like" temperatures between 0°F and -10°F tonight.
  • Plumbing Safety: D.C. water officials recommend leaving a thin stream of water running in faucets located on exterior walls to prevent pipes from freezing.
  • Small Craft Advisory: A small craft advisory is in effect for all nearby marine zones on the Potomac, with gusts up to 30 knots.

As the city continues to recover from the snow and ice of the past 48 hours, the extreme cold remains the primary concern. Stay warm and stay informed as this arctic blast lingers through the middle of the week.
