Advisory Neighborhood Commission 6A Conducts Special Election

Residents of the District’s Ward 6 are heading to the polls today, Saturday, February 7, 2026, for a special election to fill two vacant seats on Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 6A. The election is being held to select new commissioners for Single Member Districts 6A01 and 6A02. Voting is taking place in person from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 1300 H Street NE.

The race for the 6A01 seat features candidates Scott Burger and Lorena Gil, while the 6A02 seat is contested by Ashley Blake and Kimberly Butler. ANC 6A, which covers a significant portion of the Capitol Hill and H Street corridors, plays a critical role in advising the D.C. government on issues ranging from zoning and liquor licenses to neighborhood safety and transportation. District officials have encouraged all registered voters within these specific boundaries to participate, noting that these hyperlocal representatives serve as the primary link between residents and the Mayor’s office.

Mayor Bowser Issues Urgent Extreme Cold Alert

While the election proceeds, Mayor Muriel Bowser has issued an urgent Extreme Cold Alert for the entire District. Today’s weather forecast includes dangerously low temperatures and high winds that are expected to persist throughout the weekend. The Mayor’s office has activated the city’s hypothermia response plan, ensuring that low-barrier shelters remain open 24 hours a day to provide warmth and safety for vulnerable residents.

“We are urging all residents to remain vigilant and look out for one another as these freezing conditions move through our city,” the Mayor stated in an official release. Residents are encouraged to call the 311 Shelter Hotline to request transportation to warming centers for those in need. The District’s Department of Public Works has also reminded residents to be mindful of frozen pipes and to check on elderly neighbors during this period of extreme weather.

Community Events and Infrastructure Updates

As part of the city’s ongoing celebration of Black History Month, the Tenley-Friendship Neighborhood Library is hosting a special community event at 1:00 p.m. today. The program is part of a citywide series of grants and events recently announced by the Mayor’s office to preserve and protect historic Black cemeteries and cultural heritage sites within the District.

Finally, residents are advised that DC Water has scheduled essential maintenance for this evening. Between 9:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., the "My DC Water" portal and the self-service hotline will be temporarily unavailable. The Emergency Command Center will remain open for urgent water or sewer issues, and federal government offices in the District are currently maintaining a normal operating status.
